I have a user on a win98 pc with office 2000 std. When he imports
high number with thousands separated by spaces from anothe
application, excel perceives the number as text.

In regional settings on the machine, the space character " " is set a
the separator symbol for thousands.

Another user does the exact same thing on a winXP pc with the desire
result, the number is displayed and treated as a number.

What should I do? Type the ascii code for space in the box in regiona
settings?

Am I just being incredibly lame here?

I tested pasting a number containing spaces written in notepad int
Excel, and I got the desired result.

Other users copy directly from the other application (an accountanc
application) into excel without problems.

I've not tried, however, to format cells as numbers before pasting. Wil
do that and get back to you.

Thanks so far

Do I have to install a newer OS on that old piece of junk?

The application I'm copying numbers (as text apparently) from is
database frontend (MS SQL) - could that have something to do with it
