Bob M.

I am trying to resolve this problem for a friend. It's a
Windows XP Home machine that opens with the usual welcome
screen. When you try to log on it immediately logs off
and goes back to the welcome screen. I suspect a virus.
Can anyone suggest a virus removal tool I could use to get
to first base.

Thanks!
Bob M.

Since you cannot get XP to fully load , you will have a hard time to run a
virus program . Try using selective startup. Last good and safe mode. I
think you may have boot problems unrelated to a virus. Jym

Jym,
I am having a hard time getting to safe mode. I am using the F8 key, but it doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

Jym,
I am unable to load safe mode with the F8 key. Wondering
if the keyboard is faulty. Anyway, any other suggestions
how I can get to safe mode.

Thanks!

You need to press the F8 key in a quick repetitive manner immediately after
startup. Just holding down the key may not work. Jym

Hello guys,

I am having exactly the same problem since one of my children obtained
unauthorised accedss to visit a dodgey games site !

I am sure you will find this is a virus, not a hardware problem. This
is the view of our PC supplier, from whom I have just got the machine
back (still with the problem).

I have succeeded in loading XP in safe mode, but the login problem
remains the same, I am now looking at using System Recovery Console
(See MS 307545), but the problem is the repair copy of the system file
is missing. I think it may have been deleted by the virus.

I am going into the office to copy a set of config files off another
machine we have there. Otherwise it looks like reinstall.

If it's any help, we have a home network, and it is still possible to
view the shared folders on the corrupted machibe. I am therefore able
to recover 95% of my data, but still a real pain to have to do a
complete setup.

Will let you know how I get on.

BTW, I update my anti-virus definitions every week, and am also using
the latest XP service pack, so these viruses can still get you even if
yiu take all the precautions !
