We are having problems where laptops will not boot, recovery console
doesn't recognize the password so the only option is to manually insert/copy
the missing files to the c:\Windows\system32 folder. This is possible only
if we remove the primary drive, connect it to another PC as a secondary and
copy the files over. However, we have this problem with units in the filed
and it would be fast to send them a bootable piece of media and have them
copy the files to fix the problem. Any ideas if/how this can be done??
(error messages during boot are lsass.exe and services.exe missing, messages
appear sequentially not at the same time)
TIA!

Use the recovery console from the windows 2000 professional CD.

You don't need to logon! - It's not a bug - it's a feature... :)

Hi Bernd,

Yes, you can try to boot with the Windows 2000 recovery console to access
the c:\windows\system32 folder.

I think the best way is to move the hard disk to another computer and copy
the file to the c:\windows\system folder on the hard disk.

We also can use the WinPE startup CD to start the computer to access the
hard disk.

Note: the WinPE CD is not free for download.
