Hi -

Our neighbors just got a new computer and would like to set it up so
their kids have zero internet access (and such that they can't get
around it).

Seems to me there should be a way to set up a limited user account with
no network configuration and then simply not allow them to change that,
but I'm more of a unix guy than windows guy so am not sure where to
look...

Is that possible?

McAfee Privacy (www.mcafee.com) gives the Administrator, in this case, the
parent the right to list different users. Each user will have different
access to the computer and this can include no Internet access, I believe, -
or can limit the usage to specific times.

Each user (children and adults) will be given a userid and password. Of
course, it depends on the Administrator and the adults keeping their
passwords secret from the children.

Took a look, but all it seems to allow is content filtering/blocking,
not outright denial. Do you know for a fact it does this? That would
be exactly what they want if it really worked...

thanks!

You may find the following a viable solution:

Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sharedaccess/default.mspx

Using the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit,
navigate to:

User Restrictions > Optional Restrictions >
Additional Internet Explorer Restrictions >
Prevent Internet Access from Internet Explorer

I checked that out (docs anyway) and it only seems to prevent access to
IE. Not Firefox or any other internet app... are the docs not clear on
that point?

Are the restricted users all running under "Limited" privileged
accounts ? I would just remove or assign a "Bogus" Gateway
in the NIC settings to prevent outgoing WAN traffic. That's a
stop gap measure since you'd have to toggle the setting in the
Administrator account for it to have full Internet access. You
could also try Zone Alarm which has a provision to "Lock" the
Internet.

However, trying to restrict PC usage is a "Cat-&-Mouse" game.
I've seen young(er) users figure out or override all kinds of
"Limits" and "Snoops" that parents have put in place.

It won't help you at the moment, but Windows Vista will have
Parental controls that allow for Time allocations and the kinds
of things you are seeking.

"Time restriction grid lets you set specific times when your children can
access the Internet."

In fact, when I checked on my McAfee Privacy I had to edit the User Nick to
check about this. To test this I restricted the access. I forgot to
unrestrict it and this morning when I logged on as Nick it wouldn't allow me
to access the Internet.

Note that I presume that is the WWW and not emails using eg OE.

I would be under the inclination to go old style. just remove the network
cable or phone line after im done with it and lock it up. excessive wear on
cords, oh well they are cheap. if you are using broadband, could turn on/off
access by either disabling internet or misconfiguring the router, then
changing the default password. easy, no extra costs or downloads needed.

There are 100's of programs out there, ranging from excellent to
terrible. I've researched into them and the best one that i found
(based on user friendliness, amount and quality of features, lack of
glitches, and value for money) is called 'Chronoger' at
http://softforyou.com I got it recently and its a very useful program
as it enables you to schedule when the Internet, and the computer as a
whole can be accessed, and for how long.
