Becky,

Your best bet is to do an "inplace upgrade"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=292175

This is like a clean install almost, but your data and other valuable information are still in place. But there are ramifications, like it doesn't get rid of gremlins, or infections. Good Luck.

I suspect that my Windows Installer is corrupted. My first attempt to
fix it was to try to reintall Windows. Duh. Wouldn't install, of
course. My question is....can I copy the msiexec.exe file from another
W2K machine and copy it over the existing file? Running W2K, sp4.

If you can boot from the CD, you will need to go into the BIOS and change the "first boot device" from Floppy to CD-ROM. To do it, when you first start the machine, start tapping the "delete" key. that will enter the BIOS. Be careful about changing anything else. When you get through, don't forget to go back into the BIOS and change back to "Floppy".

BTW, You will need to have your 4 boot disks, if your CD-ROM is not bootable.

Good Luck,
don

Don, Actually, this is what I tried to do first. Once the proces
begin, it stops and the error message is something along the lines o
"Windows cannot continue because there is a partially installed progra
that has not completed installing. Reboot your computer and allow th
program to complete, then restart the inplace upgrade". The proble
is, I do not know of any partially installed programs. I eve
un-installed the last couple of programs I had installed (a couple o
months back), then retried the inplace install. No luck.

Regarding your next kind reply to my problem, what can I hope t
achieve by booting from the cd? I have tried booting from the W2K cd
ran the Repair function, but nothing is fixed.

The reason I belive that the msiexec.exe proram is corrupted i
because:

1. Everytime I try to install a new program, I get error message
saying that "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and will no
continue" (approximate wording).
2. I cannot start my Norton Anti-virus program and Norton says this i
due to a problem with the Windows Installer.
file?

I'm beginning to wonder if I can even do a clean install, which I hav
not tried yet.

Thanks very much, Beck
