Possible corrupted files

At first, I had corrupted files which I fixed by doing a complete
re-install of Windows XP. Down loaded all up-dates one by one, trying note
pad each time to see if key board would work, it was one of problems I
encountered before the crash.
Now having problems again, showing up as old style icons on desktop,
AT&T Yahoo Install does'nt show up as usual, shows up as Microsoft Internet
Explorer, other odds and ends I've seen, but can't identify, just an amateur.
Would like to know how to isolate, or identify what files are corrupted
if any, and how to replace or fix them, like make up an example dti.ddl.exe
What Microsoft site to go to.
What Microsoft page, link, etc.
I went to Microsoft site, did some serious browsing, did a search for
"Start up utilities" search came up with one possible download for
Sysinternals Utilities.Index, clicked on the link and up pops a boat load of
individual file names of basic Windows files that comprise the Windows XP
program tree you see when you click on Start, then explore, up pops a window
that shows all the different file icons. I did not, repeat, did not in any
way change any thing at all. The Video Professor Windows tutorial disks
taught me better than that.....

Hi Donnie,

Put your WinXP OS disk in your CDROM drive. go to [Start] > [Run]

in the dialog box that appears type;

sfc /scannow

This will check your system files on your hard disk with the files
on the CD if they are different and not a MS update, SFC will copy
the files from the CD onto your hard disk.

Tried the possible fix, but regretably it didn't work, must be because the
software copyright is antique at 2002 vintage, the machine didn't recognize
the sfc/scannow file....Clicked on the link at the bottom of the page, trippy
story line....Nice quotation too....Someday we might see some with wisdom
like that in the White House Oval Office and elsewhere....

Hi Donnie,

Couple of questions; 1) What version of XP are you using (include
service pack) 2) The files that you believe are corrupted, are they
WinXP system files or applications.

In order for SFC to work properly, the CD must be the same as the OS
you are trying to repair. If your CD is an original WinXP or Service
Pack 1 and the WinXP on your computer is WinXP[sp2] then you would
have problems. The easiest solution is to SlipStream your CD and
create a new CD that has the correct service pack on it. Mr. Paul
Thurrott has written an excellent on the subject. The article can be
found at;

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

If the files you are trying to repair are not a part of WinXP, the
SFC application will not be able to repair them.

BTW, Lao Tzu was interested in 'truth' where-as politicians are
guided by expediency. Truth and expediency rarely are the same. More
often then not they run parallel to each other and never meet.
