Portalplayer software

I am installing My Sirius Studio software and it also installs Portalplayer
software.
The MSS install goes OK but the Portalplayer install crashes ...message
dialog box - "An error occurred during a seek operation". The install
continues. MSS works OK but no Portalplayer software to be found.
What could be the conflict with my system that will not allow this program
to install?

You should ask the My Sirius Studio/Portalplayer tech support people
that.

I have. No help.
It must be having a conflict with some setting on the computer.
It uses .net 1.1 also.
I noticed my kids had deleted what I think was a "asp.net" user account on
the computer a while ago. How can I (should I) get it back?

thanks.

Uninstall your third-party software. Use Add/Remove Programs for this.
Reboot after any uninstall.

Go back to Windows Updates and install .Net. This will be under
"non-priority Updates". Reboot when it tells you after installation.
Then go back to Windows Update and get all updates for .Net. Reboot
after installations.

Try installing your third-party software now. Tell your kids to leave
your computer alone.

Got .Net 2.0 from Update and got the service pack.
asp.net user account is back (have to make a non admin acct for kids).
Picked up latest MSinstall ver too.
Tried software install again but same results.
Install sheild goes and it's trying to execute the Portalplayer .exe that
was extracted but it gives the error dialog box and folds back up, deleting
the folder it created for Portalplayer.
Other XP users have no problem. Has to be something on my system.

Yes. Unfortunately, the only one who can troubleshoot this is you
because you are the only one who can see your computer and the
computers where the program works properly.

I have tried the install in safe mode with the same results. So my guess is
it's not some other app, it's a Window XP thing. I have been able to extract
the Northstar_SP_6.872.exe file that is crashing. Tried it on it's own with
the same result. It's big (12MB) so I don't know how you could look at it
without maybe downloading the software yourself.
Maybe my XP is messed up. Can I do an over-install and fix/replace any
problem files?
thanks,
Paul

I'm sorry, but at this point I'm going to recommend that if the software
is important to you, you get answers from its tech support staff OR
have a local computer professional come on-site and take a look. I'm
not interested in installing this piece of software to troubleshoot it
for you and besides, what it does or doesn't do on one of *my* Windows
machines doesn't matter. The issue is what is going wrong with *your*
Windows machine. You've already said other XP users (presumably in your
office where others are running the same program) don't have an issue.
Find out what is different about their computers. This is where a
professional can make a determination based on a hands-on diagnosis.

I'm always reluctant to suggest a reinstall, particularly on a machine
that I've never seen because of an issue with a program I've never
heard of. It would be smarter for you to find out why you are having
difficulties. For all you know, you'll go through the work of
reinstalling your operating system to run into the same issue again.
Better to figure out the reason instead.

Good luck,

Malke

Sorry, thought I could get some help here by people who are familiar if not
experts with XP.
I have tried to install the program with a clean boot so my guess is that
it's a conflict or problem with XP and not another program/process.
I was suggesting the over-install to maybe fix/replace XP files that need to
be fixed anyway.

Just for fun, go into your local CompUSA (or whatever your equivalent of
Big Computer Store is). Look around at all the software that is for
sale for the Windows XP operating system. Thousands of programs, and
there are thousands more not sold in the store but are available online
or from specialty sources. Every one of those programs interacts with
the operating system (Windows XP).

In addition to the program software, every PC has hardware and every
piece of hardware has accompanying software - called a driver - that
tells an operating system how to use the hardware. PC's can have
thousands of different combinations of hardware and therefore software.
The driver software also interacts with the operating system and
sometimes with other programs installed on the operating system.

You have said that other people running XP on their computers
successfully run the program with which you are having trouble. This
means that there is no fundamental problem with the program and XP (the
operating system). Therefore, logically there must be something about
your computer that differs from your colleague's computer when your
colleague can run the software. As I said, there is no way someone
reading about this issue in a newsgroup can tell you what is different
on your computer and your colleague's computer.

Call in a professional and have them take a look.
