What kind of router do you have?
Is it a regular domestic NAT device?

It shouldn't be necessary to make any settings.
You are not running any kind of server so you
dont need to forward any ports.

The outgoing connection initiated by you should create
an entry in the NAT table thus permitting the return traffic.

I've used windows update from behind many different
NAT routers without any configuration.

If you cant get windows update to work,
perhaps theres another problem?

.I have alinksys befsx41 router and windows updates
won't work thru it ..

I don't use the router and updates work fine on my xp pro
client.

I have a ME client on the same router and it works fine.

I was told I might have to open some ports for XP

If the ME box can access windows update,
then there's nothing wrong with the router.

XP does not need any special treatment in this regard.

Can the XP box visit other websites etc through the router?

I can go and do anything on web I need to through router with XP..
download upload whatever...just can't update unless I plug direct into sat. modem

do you think I need to repair my ie

I agree with Ron Lowe that there isn't anything wrong with the router. What
happens when you try to attempt to connect to the Windows Update site? There
are many possible solutions if you receive some errors, providing the error
may help knowing the problem. You could try repairing IE and see what
happens.
