No.
Is IE running??
Port 80 is used by: Internet Explorer, Yahoo Instant Messenger, FrontPage ( for
publishing ) and many other things.

Does FrontPage 2003 permanently open port 80 up? I made sure IIS wasn't
installed but for some reason port 80 appears to still be open even when FP
isn't running.

This being the case, is there anyway to shut down port 80?

Thanks,

Jim

No, it does not. It is open by default

If you think of the information superhighway, picture lane
#80 as being the http protocal. Many items use that lane,
such as browsers (eg IE, Mozilla), FrontPage, Instant
Messengers. If the lane is closed, none of that traffic
goes through.

Well, basically, the problem came from a third party. I think he went to a
place like ShieldsUp that probed his computer for open ports and found that
80 was open when it wasn't open before he installed FP2003. That made him a
bit concerned so I told him I would ask the question in the FP newsgroup.
When I get a chance, I'll look at this computer personally to and get to the
bottom of it.

Thanks for the replies. They put me a step closer to figuring out the
problem.

Aah, Shields Up port checker from www.grc.com

Have the person check their firewall settings. FrontPage needs permission from the
firewall for port 80 access and the setting may have changed as a result of the FrontPage
install.
