Tried downloading MS' "upgrade" to stop the popups.
Haven't been able to get it to work.

I'm planning on suing these popup guys for attempted
extortion.

BTW, it's mostly the same company running
BROADCASTBLOCKER.COM, FIGHTPOPUPS.COM, BUSTPOPUPS.COM,
MESSAGEAWAY.COM, KILLMESSENGER.COM, and PRIVACYSAVER.ORG,
on the same servers.

There isn't an upgrade that will stop the popups. Your XP system already
has Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) installed. You simply have to enable
it - or enable the firewall at your router (where the Internet gets split up
among your networked machines, if you have a network). For instructions on
enabling ICF, see http://support.microsoft.com/?id=330904

Great idea - you might also get in touch with your state's AG, and see if
they want to do so on behalf of the large number of their state's consumers
that are being similarly harrassed.

How are they extorting you? Because i know that they
exadgerate, bend the truth, and sometimes just down-right
lie, by saying that they can message you because of
Windows Messenger, which is a lie. But why are you
planning to sue them, i've never had these ads get that
severe. Im just curious, because i probably agree with
you.

I kind of like the idea of charging them advertizing fees. As, they
are using my screen as a billboard :)

Here is where I have a problem with people who say they are being extorted
by popup ads.

Extort:
obtain by coercion or intimidation

So you are telling me that you are intimidated by a message on your computer
screen? That's like being intimidated by a postcard you didn't ask for. If
you see something you don't understand, it shouldn't intimidate you. It
should make you want to find out what it is and if it is bad - how to
prevent it.

Okay, so what would you call it (other than a sign that you need a
firewall[*]), when someone repeatedly plasters inappropriate and unwanted
messages all over your screen, which have to be dismissed one by one, and
where many of those messages are offers to sell you something that stops the
very same messages? It's rather like plastering paper after paper on your
door, offering to stop papering your door if you pay them. Maybe not as
threatening as throwing bricks through your window and then offering to
"protect" you, but it's still a racket.

[*] But that's still no defense - even an unlocked door is not a valid
excuse for breaking and entering a home.

I thought I made that clear. If someone pasted things on my door, I would
buy a mean dog that would maul their butt.. Or install motion detection
spray cans of paint or electrify my door or tell them to leave.. Contact the
law, find out my rights, if that includes shooting the intruder, shoot the
intruder. Maybe I would put up a fence.

What would I call it? A reason to learn my rights and my options to stop
what they are doing. It's only a racket if you refuse to educate yourself.
If you educate yourself and don't fall prey, then there is no racket.

Someone annoying me is a reason for me to learn how to stop them from doing
that within the rights and abilities I have. It is not coercion. It is a
temporary annoyance. Just like my ability to stop them from pasting things
on my door(it's my property - I can stop them in MANY ways - I just have to
investigate those ways and choose one) - I have the same ability to stop
messages from being posted on my computer(also my property.)
