I recently had xp- professional installed. Of late I'm
getting a bunch of pop-up messages but one really
annoying one that tells me my system is open to hackers
etc. It pops up every couple of minutes. I went to add/
remove porgrams to see what might be on there that could
be directing this thing. I recognized most of the
programs but there were a couple that i did not
recognize. Before removing them I wanted to make sure
that they were not related to my xp program. Could you
tell me which if any that may be the cause of these pop-
ups. I don't if this is the right discussion group, my
first time doing this.

The programs on my computer are:

Audiogalaxy Satellite
Java 2 Runtime Environment
KBD
Lernout & Hauspie The Voi8ce American English
NVIDIA Windows 2000x/p display drivers
PS2
Background Magic

Any Help would be appreciated

Should a pop up box appear on your screen with the
words "Messenger Service" in the title bar such as the
one below, chances are that you have Windows Messenger
Services enabled.

Windows XP Professional
1. Click Start » Settings » Control Panel
2. Click Administrative Tools
3. Double click Services
4. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
5. Right click the highlighted line and choose
Properties
6. Click the STOP button
7. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll
bar
8. Click OK

I hope this helps! Please let me know if it does.

Not the right approach, actually - this is a bandaid. The underlying problem
still exists, and given the recent fun and games with the RPC worm, needs to
be corrected properly once and for all.

You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not in itself harmful,
but is symptomatic of a larger problem - your computer has ports open from
the Internet.

You can disable the Messenger service, but that is unwise as a solution as
you'll still have the underlying problem that caused you to get the messages
in the first place - consider the messages a useful warning that you have no
protection from the Internet. You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not
