Pop-up I couldn't get rid of

Here's one I've never seen before. I had my pop-up filter turned off
temporarily, and got one with the title "VBScript: Advertisement -
Registry Cleaner." It said I "have not completed a scan for registry errors"
and asked if I want to "scan for and correct any registry problems problems
with Registry Cleaner now (recommended)?" There were Yes and No buttons
which I did not click on.

Clicking on the red X in the upper right corner did not close the pop-up; it
was
evidently just a dummy button.

In the task bar it was identified as "http:// c1.zedo.com - Undertone
Networks.com . . . " I recognize Undertone as a frequent source of pop-ups
but haven't seen the other name before. Right-clicking that tab did NOT
bring up the usual option to close which pop-ups generally have.

Since I did not want to click on either button in the ad, I seemed to have
no choice but to shut down and restart. Is there any other way to safely get
rid of something like this if I get another one?

SpyBot Search and Destroy specifically searches for zedo, among others.

Yes, I tried ctrl-alt-del too, but the problem is there are so many things
running and I don't really know what they are. I didn't see any program name
that looked suspicious, but then I suppose this sort of thing would have a
non-suspicious name. Nothing had a name that seemed related to the pop-up or
its sender.

I suppose what I should do is use ctrl-alt-del to make a list of programs
running when I first start up the computer. That at least will narrow down
the possibilities if I get another one of these pesky things I can't stop
any other way.

Thanks. I normally have a pop-up blocker running as well as an anti-spyware
program, both supplied by my cable ISP. The pop-up blocker is generally
effective, but I had turned it off temporarily and forgot to turn it back
on.

I'll save that link though and look into it at more depth if this problem
recurs. The tab in taskbar did also say "Provided by Microsoft (something or
other)" but I don't think it was Messenger.

Was this a Pop-Up or a Pop-Under ?, I read a couple of days
back about a new method for distributing this clutter that bypasses
normal Pop-Up filtering by doing what was called a Pop-Under.
Just a few minutes ago I closed a couple of apps and noticed a
Pop-(Something) behind the IE page I had open. This is with IE's
Pop-Up blocker and AdSubtract both filtering Ads. This was the
first of these things I've seen in ages. I don't think most of these
things are "Stand-Alone" processes or running apps but content
spawned by the IE session itself. Anyway, scans with AdAware,
Spybot and MS - Antispyware couldn't hurt. Hopefully, this new
Pop-Under stuff will be something easy to trap by filtering apps.

Make sure SecondThought has not invaded your machine. The application
stcloader.exe should be completely removed from your hard drive. Do a search
for "stcloader" and delete all the files found, and especially the one in
your registry. I had never edited my registry before, but this was quick and
painless, and the results were most satisfactory. No more RegClean offers!
