pop-up blocking

when I am logged on the computer, I get such things as new
mortgage company's and it won't let me clear it. The only
way I can clear it is the turn off the computer. Can you
tell me how to fix this?
 
1. Get a firewall. XPs built in firewall, or something like ZoneAlarm. This
will block the messenger service (no relation to MSN or Windows Messenger,
the messaging application.)

2. If it's coming up while browsing (in new browser windows,) look into
popup blocking software, or use another browser such as Mozilla.
 
Or prehaps its from downloaded 'Adware', in that case uninstall any program
that sits around in your system tray or on your browser toolbars.

Mozilla pisses me off.

spy/malware - Spybot is perfect for that, it's available from
