All items I print are fine except word docs. they print poorly unless i set
the quality to "best."
Why won't "normal" print acceptably?

This is a function of the printer and printer driver, not Word. On my old HP
DeskJet printer, normal quality is great; in fact, there usually no
noticeable difference between normal and best quality on that printer. But
the same document printed from my computer to a colleague's newer HP DeskJet
prints not quite as well as my printer in normal quality and comparable to my
printer in best quality.

Tools >options > print - ensure 'draft output' is unchecked.
