Where do you set the polling interval in exchange system manager? also,
would this cause messages to hang in the outbox for a few moments on the
client's pc?

If the UDP events are not reaching the client from Exchange, then Outlook
2003 will poll the server once every 60 seconds. This value can be changed,
but it isn't changed in exchange system manager. Check the Outlook 2003
administrative template (*.adm) file if you wish to go the route of setting
a GPO.

ps - don't go lower than 60 seconds and yes, this does give an appearance of
the message hanging out for a few moments when Outlook 2003 is running in
cached mode.

well my clients are hanging in the outbox and with new mail... the users are
starting to complain to me and i dont' know what could of changed to start
this problem... question is... why shouldn't i drop polling interval below
60 seconds? too much activity?

i would like to resolve the issue with mail hanging, just a week ago
everything was fine and nothing has changed... i don't know where this
latency came from :(

thanks for the help!

Any changes to client desktop configuration or network? For example, SP2
for Windows XP was released a while back and folks are just starting to
deploy in corporate environments. Considering that SP2 for Windows XP
automatically turns on the built-in firewall and the firewall is known to
block the incoming UDP packet, this would trigger Outlook 2003 to fall back
to polling. If this sounds like a candidate, then
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;264035 might be what
you need to tell Outlook 2003 to use a fixed udp port. From there an active
directory gpo could configure the firewall to allow comms on said port. :)

As for activity, I'm not sure what your environment is like so I can't
answer. I just think it is silly to have Outlook poll the server once every
minute considering that the average user doesn't see 1 message every minute.
If I received one message every minute, I'm guessing something is seriously
wrong.
