I am trying to change my pointer from a spaceship to an arrow but after going
through all the steps I am told I get no change. Please help. Thank you

What are "all the steps I am told"? Usually all you need to do is go to
the Mouse applet and Pointers tab. Use the drop-down arrow to choose a
Pointer scheme and then Apply/OK out. If you are using a third-party
theming application that comes with pointers or you installed some
third-party cursors app, disable or uninstall them.
