pointer/cursor problem

I recently re-installed Windows XP from a recovery disc, guided by someone
from technical support for my computer. There was something to do with video
that he didn't bother with because I never use the computer as a tv. Since
then I've noticed that when I use the mouse for web pages the cursor/pointer
sometimes creeps slowly across the page of its own accord, as if it's trying
to get away without me noticing. It only happens occasionally, and oddly
enough I seem to remember that it was also a problem, and more of one, when I
first had the pc a year or two ago. I think that I posted the problem then,
too, and that I was advised to download some software. Anyway, it worked,
whatever it was. Could it be connected with the video software, or part of
it, being left out?
Any advice would be appreciated.

In the first instance I would try a different mouse, preferably on
a different port. In other words, if the crawling mouse connects
to the PS/2 port, try a USB mouse.

Is it an optical mouse? If so change the surface on which it rests.

Thanks for the help from my two correspondents. I'll do as they suggest and
see what happens.
