PLZ help: error 6118 ... no longer LAN file exchange

Hello,

2 XP pc's where able to exchange files via LAN.
For some reason this no longer works.
NIC and protocols seem fine.
Repair and re-install make no diff.
Ipconfig release and renew at no avail.
Found no virus / worm or spyware.

Ping LAN-IP is ok.
Ping pc-name causes
System error 6118 has occurred. The list of servers for this workgroup is
not currently available.

Most likely cause from MS KB is firewall enabled, but it's disabled.
That is, select box is empty.

Any clues ....

Has anyone recently stopped any services?

Reading the description of various services I found that
the "Computer Browser" service is supposed to keep list of
computers, for example. Couple of other possible ones are
the 'Server' or 'Workstation' services.
