With HP printers you have to run the software installation with the printer disconnected until the
software asks you to connect the USB cable.
Try deleting all the generic printers you tried to install and remove any folders that were created
by installing the software after the printer. Then try the installation disk again.
For what it is worth, hidden deep in the HP support files is the requirement for 250 Megs of RAM
memory if you want to install their all-in-one printers on an XP system.
Also, I just got a HP Deskjet 3845, which I LOVE (my nicest
printer yet).
One TINY glitch.
I KNOW you can't plug in the usb connector until it asks you
to. (you DO have to have the printer on, so the computer CAN
find it, once it's plugged in).
But they DON"T tell you, you have about 1.5 SECONDS to plug
it in once you're warned. I mean LITERALLY.
If I miss that "envelope", I have to uninstall and start
from scratch.
I know I've succeeded when I plug in the usb connector, and
I get the musical jingle that the computer "sees it", and
the balloon comes up "usb device found" or whatever it says.
If I don't get the music and the balloon, in about 5 seconds
(at the OUTSIDE), I have to uninstall, and reinstall.
Pain! But once it's installed, the print quality is
DAZZLING!
Good luck!
