Hi All

I have a customer who has a 5 yr old Tiny PC (its an Athlon 850)
The PC has a fresh install of XP on it.

When I plug any USB device into the PC the whole thing hangs (no error
message)

If I unplug any USB device while the PC is running the PC hangs too.

However, if I start the PC with the USB device(s) plugged in then all
works fine.

Does anyone know why this happens? How can I resolve this?

TIA

Harry

An AMD machine of that age is most likely one of the earlier Via chipsets.

Some of those had pretty serious issues with the USB implimentation. If it
is Via based then I suggest you check www.viaarena.com for the USB drivers
that resolved some of these issues, I also suggest that you make sure you
have the latest version of the Via 4in1 drivers installed (although I don't
think these have anything to do with USB they do make a difference to AGP
and disk performance)

Also check for Bios updates as I have found some of these to improve USB and
AGP issues in Via boards.

Another thing I had once was a borderline PSU where the (slight) extra
current load on the +5v rail when inserting a USB device caused enough of a
dip on the rail to crash the machine...I'd expect that was one of those
one-off things though.
