I am using XP SP2.
When I plug in a USB mass storage device, I get the pop-up that says "Found
New Hardware - USB Mass Storage Device" and rather than automatically
loading the driver, up comes the Wizard. If I select the "Install the
softaware Automatically" button, then the wizard fails to find the necessary
driver. If I select "Install from a list or specific location" and point
it at windows/system32/drivers (or any other obvious place) then it still
fails to find a driver. I have a file called USBSTOR.DLL in there which
I thought was the driver, but the Wizard won't use it.
Other USB devices (2 scanners, memory card readers, etc) all work fine.
The memory sticks I use all work fine in other XP machines I use.
I have tried rebooting with the memory stick inserted, but just go through
the same dialogue.
I have searched for driver on the Microsoft site, and on a memory stick
vendor's site (IBM), but can't find anything. Anyhow, this has always
worked for me in XP on other machines without installing anything extra.
The Microsoft knowledge base always seems to lead back to the same Wizard.
Can anyone help? It is a real pain as sticks are the easiest way to
exchange data beteeen machines.
Thanks,
Mike
