I am interested in building a spreadsheet that will allow me to put in my
investment account values at periodic dates over the past five years. I
would like to compare rates of return (between two different investments)
based on the actual amounts included in my periodic statements. Any help
will be appreciated.

TIA,

Tom

Hi,

Are you looking for total account, plus the underlying investment
returns? Are you including cashflows in your periodic calculations?

The following link has a downloadable workbook that will allow you to
calculate the (monthly) return with cashflows:

You can adapt (extend) it for your needs. Please note that the
Modified BAI measure is mathematically equivalent to IRR (XIRR in
Excel), although it is used slightly differently. The Modified Dietz
formula is a closed-form solution that is a good first-order
approximation.

For multiple periods, use the PRODUCT function with your return series.
Annualize if required.

Post back if you require additional assistance.

Regards,
Jay
