Hello, I am writing this on behalf of a friend, who is unable to use his
computer at all.
He has been running a Windows XP computer for about 2 and a half years now,
and recently had to perform a reinstall with the recovery disc after the
computer failed to start, showing the error message "Unmountable boot volume".
After doing the reinstall, he found that the problems had only just started,
there were random reboots with no error message, as well as complete freeze
ups which could only be fixed with a forced shutdown. On one occassion, he
had a black screen on start up which said the memory card was at fault, yet
in the days following that, he discovered in the BIOS that the processor fan
was stated at "0"; internet explorer kept crashing; every time he tried to
enter the control panel/registery, the computer crashed, and yet more random
reboots.
Yesterday, the computer crashed and would not restart- showing the
"Unmountable_Boot_Volume" message again. When trying to use the recovery cd,
the reinstallation of windows failed (he got an error message saying that
file structures could not be found, as well as another message:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL).
I am not computer literate, but I have gone through the microsoft support
pages on error messages, and none of them seem to relate to my friend's
experience. However, it seems to me that his hard drive is perhaps in dire
condition?
Thanks for you time
