I will start wit an apology because this is long but I want to give as much
info as possible because I really need help with this. I have 2 computers, a
dell dimension 3000 desktop hard wired through a linksys cabel internet
modem, and a dell inspirion 8600 laptop connected wireless through a D-Link
DI 624 wireless router, trying to get online. The router is connected to the
modem and the desktop is hard wired to the router. The laptop has a wireless
card internally. The desktop runs fine but the laptop has a hard time
connecting to the wireless connection. At most times the laptop is about 6
feet from the wireless router.
What I'd really like is the internet to work better and more consistently
but if I could network the two so we can share files without having to drop
it to a flash drive and toss the flash drive back and forth computer to
computer it'd be great. I tried to run the wireless network wizard on the
laptop and set up the file through the flash drive to the desktop but it
didn't work. When I tried to set up the network from the desktop it didn't
give me the option to create a wireless network so I set up a regular network
and transferred it to the laptop but it didn't work it.
My laptop shows up in the list of available connections and it will connect
usually but it takes a long time to acquire an ip address. It connecst
excellent at 56mbps at first then drops to low strength at 1mbps. After a
bit, it says there is a conflict with an ip address on the network. I tired
to network the two but it didn't work at all. Neither can see each other. The
desktop can see the "home" workgroup but the laptop doesnt have permssion.
I reset the router last week but it didn't change anything. I checked the ip
address of the router and changed the laptop address to like 100 and the
deskop is 101. I tried to make the router connect with a security encryption
key (I think that's what it's called, the 10 digit key you make up for
encryption) and set the key to the lap top but that wouldnt let it connect
any better.
This problem is getting harder to deal with because my boyfriend feels like
I messed something up on his laptop to make it stop working online. It's
frustrting because he's the main user of the laptop. He got it 1 year ago at
Christmas and I got the desktop 1 year and 1 month ago. They both run Norton
Antivirus and both are XP home OS. Please, if you have anything to share,
share your knowledge! I need help.
