I cannot believe that Microsoft has not thought of us before. I cannot
believe that someone like me has not yet written the following before. If
they have, I guess they were ignored.
Dear Microsoft:
There are XP users who are native English speakers that do not live in a
country where English is the native language. There are those of us who have
non-English OSes for work or whatever reason but who want to run English
programs. PLEASE think of us.
I live in Japan, am bilingual and would like a bilingual PC. It's not much
to ask, and I've been able to set up things pretty much how I like them on my
PC. The newest version of Movie Maker (2.1) is included in the SP2 install.
Because the SP2 install "sniffs" your OS, you have to install the
same-language version of SP2. So, after installing the Japanese SP2, I found
that my Movie Maker had turned into the Japanese version. To keep it short, I
rolled back, got rid of SP2, and got my old setup (which took some doing)
back, with the English version of WMM back. The security goodies aren't
really going to help a careful person like me, anyway, and so they are NOT
worth the inconvenient side-effects. (Actually, the Movie Maker issue is my
only real gripe.)
Why oh why can't you keep things separate for those of us who want the
freedom to set up things the way we want -- especially those of us who are
bilingual? I can get Media Player in English if I wanted it -- I want also to
be able to get Movie Maker in English. I would also like IE and OE in
English, but you won't allow it, so I'm using other programs. (My old
Japanese Win95 allowed the installation of English IE and OE.) THERE ARE
THOSE OF US WHO WANT ENGLISH SOFTWARE ON FOREIGN VERSIONS OF XP. Please think
of us.
Sillier yet, Microsoft has foreign language interface packs for the English
version of Movie Maker, BUT they do not have an English language pack for
foreign language versions. No imagination. You need to live overseas for a
while.
TO ANYONE WITH ANY CONNECTION TO MICROSOFT:
There are people like me who live abroad and need a foreign language version
OS for work or whatever, and would like to run English programs on it. PLEASE
think about us. Please separate programs from service packs. Please give us
the option of switching to English interfaces when we want. PLEASE!
In fact, an English interface option for the basic OS would be wonderful. I
KNOW you could do it.
Anyway, I won't be installing SP2 until I can get a solution to this.
