PLEASE I need someone's help. BAD. I was a complete idiot
the other day and decided to change my ntskornl file.
Well I backed up the existing one, then went into safe
mode and replaced it with my new file. Well I restarted
the computer, and sure enough my new boot screen was
there, but then when the computer was ready to go to the
blue logon screen....the screen turned black and it
restarted itself. I tried to even go into safe mode and
change the file back, but the computer keeps restarting
itself. I know I messed it up now,I can tell.
So I tried starting the computer up using an XP disk, and
I booted from the CD rom and let it go thru the windows
setup thingy, then when it asks if I want to either
-press enter to setup XP
-Press R to repair XP
So i pressed Enter, then it asks where you want to setup
at, and it gives you a choice down below (which mine only
has one choice) so I chose the C:/windows......etc. and
then I clicked R to repair that. Well it goes thu the
file setup and all, then it restarts and when it
restarts, it starts io install windows. It can sit there
for hours, and do nothing (always says 39 minutes
remaining)...It does nothing. So I restarted once again,
and went thru the whole thing again, and then it will ask
me if I want to Continue Upgrading XP from when I just
did it from the time before, or if I wan to install a
fresh copy. Well i clicked continue and it does the same
thing....stays n that 39 minute thing....
What did I Do? Is there any way to go and chage that one
file back without being able to actually boot onto XP?
Did I lose everything I had on there?
I can not afford to lose any info on the laptop, so I am
desperate.....
I need some advice on what to do PLEASE!!!!

i will try to help ya, lets try this
boot from XP CD, at the first choice of typing "R" for the repairconsole,do it, then you have to log on you old installation,if your in this "Dos-liked" mode type "copy ntskrnl.exe c:\windows".

this will work in the most cases,if not make a new install without formating the harddrive and put thie installation in a new folder

Hi, couple of things ... first of all, I'm guessing that 'joeysgirl' had
a typo and the file is actually ntoskrnl.exe and not ntskornl as posted.
If so, ntoskrnl.exe goes into c:\windows\system32 and not into
c:\windows. Finally, I believe the file is protected and will not be
able to be copied ... but it's worth a try, assuming that her original
saved file is accessible in, perhaps, another partition.

ntoskrnl.exe is part of the boot loading sequence and it would be
helpful to see what her boot.ini file looks like, but it doesn't sound
like she can get to that point.

'joeysgirl', as you've discovered, there are various versions of
ntoskrnl.exe and they are NOT compatible with one another! Since the
WinXP 'repair' protects previous OS's that it finds, I suspect that the
'hang' during Repair is due to the fact that it's going to the wrong
location. What were you trying to do in swapping the programs? Dual
boot, change the bootup screen?

Post back if the copy does not work ... Fred

Dont know what I did, but somehow I got XP to load, but
nothing that I used to have on there, is there anymore.
But I think it is hiding somewhere on the C drive, maybe
in the background or something, cuz when I go to search
for something, I can see that the names of things it goes
thru to search, is stuff that was on the laptop before I
messed it up. But how do I access that stuff? Or is it
really gone? Also when I look at the Properties of the C
drive, I see that there is the same amount of used and
free space, as there was before I messed it up. (which
was not a whole lot of free space) So I dont think that
it deletec all my stuff, it is just hiding or it is in
the background or something. But I have no clue where to
go from here. All I want is all my info that I had on my
laptop, to show up and be accessable. SO what doi I do
now?

1. Can you post back with your boot.ini file?

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or-
In Control Panel, start the Performance and Maintenance tool, and then
click System.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit.
Select All [Control-A]
Copy [Control-C]
Paste [Control-V] the contents to your reply.

2. What kind of 'stuff' are you referring to? Programs, documents,
spreadsheets, etc? Are they appearing in the list when you do the
Search (i.e. *.doc, *.xls)? Do you have a CD you can copy the data to?

3. Where I'm going with this is to think of a 'bullet proof' way for
you to recover the connection to your data if (as I suspect) the Repair
created a second instance of WinXP (having protected the original) and
you've lost the links to your original data. The boot.ini file will
tell us that. The data (stuff) should still be there and if you can find
it, it might be best to save it to a CD and do a clean install of XP and
start over ... just re-setting it to the original OS will just bring you
back to the problem with the wrong 'ntoskrnl.exe'.

I will go get the boot.ini file for you and Ill post it
in a few minutes. The STuff I am referring to is all my
information.....all the folders that I had on my desktop.
All the stuff inside the folders. All the VERY IMPORTANT
info.
When I go to the programs Menu I can still see the names
of the programs that were on the computer, but I am not
sure If I can access them. But I dont seem to find any
of the folders. That will be a very big problem if I have
lost them. I Mean VERY BIG!!!!
I will get back to you as soon as I get back to my house
where the laptop is.
Thank you all for your help.

Okay, I did what you said to do and here is what I got:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Also, when I go to the documents and settings folder in
the C: drive....it gives me these choices:
-Administrator
-All Users.WINDOWS
-joey
-Owner
-All Users
-Guest
-Joey.LAPTOP
Well the one I am on is the Joey.LAPTOP one, but before
all this happened, the one that I was using and had all
my information on it was the "joey" one. But now when I
click on that one it says:
C:\Documents and Settings\joey is not accessible
Access is denied
What does that mean? That is where all my information
should be, cuz that is the user name that I was using
before.
Thanks Guys for your help. This means a lot to me.
