I have a Sony VAio PCV-RS720G running windows XP home edition.
I have just recently received a message when I put a floppy in drive A and
try to read it. You can see the green light coming on as if it is reading it
and then I get the error message, "No disk in drive A, please insert a disk".
I have tried a dozen or more disks, so it's not the disk. I have gone to
device manager and removed floppy drive controller and reinstalled it. Still
fails. It is still under warranty so they sent a tech out to my house and
replaced the floppy drive cable, the floppy drive and then both at the same
time and it still fails. He had to come out again and replace the motherboard
(which we were sure would work) and it still failed. At this point it must
have to do with the operating system or some software.
Sony VAIO has a recovery back to original factory state, but I really don't
want to do that since other than the floppy drive it works fine and I have
everything set up the way I want. I read an article on the microsoft site
(article # 301077) which describes the exact same symptoms, but for windows
2000 with a fix. I am wondering why there isn't an article for windows XP and
if the fix fot 2000 will work on XP. I'm afraid to try it. Any body have any
ideas? I guess I could always buy an external USB floppy drive if nothing
else works.
