Ok---I'm getting a little frantic! This is my 4th posting
to this site requesting HELP--and no one is responding. A
couple of days ago, my system suddenly could not boot up
Windows XP. I don't know if it is related to the fact
that we downloaded AOL Broadband a few days earlier. I've
spent 3 hours on the phone with Dell and they refuse to
send someone because it is software related. Is there a
way to recover info on the hard drive before reinstalling
Windows XP? Is reinstallation my only option?

PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

What errors or messages do you see when you try to boot?
What information are you interested in saving?

Have you tried uninstalling AOL Broadband via Add/Remove Programs? Was the
anti-virus application running when it was installed?

How long have you been running WinXP? Earlier this year (and even two days
ago) you posted several times to an IE5 newsgroup, mainly about your IE
Toolbar disappearing. If you're running WinXP, you're running IE6.

If your toolbar keeps disappearing (and we don't know as you've never
responded to any of the replies you got), I'd take a wild guess and say your
system's been hijacked by some malware or spyware. If so, this may also be
the cause of your current problem.

If you're machine is still under Dell warranty, have them give you
instructions on formatting and reinstalling Windows, Catherine.

From a computer she says she can't boot? How is she going to manage
that?

When in doubt, take the machine to a good local computer repair shop
(not a CompUSA or Best Buy - or the equivalent in your country). Your
data can probably be saved.

Thank you! I probably should have done that several days
ago! I would love to be able to ininstall AOL Broadband!
Dell has just sent out a refurbished harddrive that I am
going to TRY to install and then connect to the old hard
drive to see if I can save anything! Wish me luck!

Thank you for your response. I cannot uninstall anything
since I cannot boot up Windows. The questions about the
Internet Explorer toolbar problem is for a different
computer--running Windows 95 and MS Internet Explorer
5.0. More than one problem I'm trying to take care of!

Thanks--oh an anti-virus application was running when it
was installed. Dell just sent me a refurbished hard drive-
-I thought that they were sending a new one--that I am
going to try to install. After installation, I'm going to
hook up the old one and try to transfer the information my
daughter needs. Then I will teach her to BACKUP!!! ;)

Thank you.
