I have a problem with reloading windows XP.

Here's what happened. The hour glass was blinking and the computer was
very slow. I went to the task manger, a file called update.exe kept
disappearing and reappearing. I tried to restart the computer, but then
at the last step when it writes uploading your personal settings,it got
stuck. I turned the computer off and on but still it gets stuck at the
same place.
I ran a virus scanner on safe mode now it will upload but very very
slow. It works fine if not connected to the internet, when I connect to
the internet the hour glass starts blinking and the same story with
update.exe.

Really need the computer,any ideas?
BTW, it's a pentium 4. And I am connected to the intranet

How long did you let it try to load before you turned it off? Some of these
updates can take awhile. The other thing you can do is restore to a previous
time start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore. Click on that
and restore to a time previous to the update. Good luck

Maybe ten minutes. I've tried all of that, but it won't work. The virus
scanner detects a virus, cleans the computer and everything is ok for a
while and then the next morning the same thing happens.

Apparently, it's possible for a virus to 'hide' in Windows' prefetch folder.
If you shut off the machine at night, it's then not surprising the junk
returns at start-up.

Try this (nothing much to lose). Delete all files from your prefetch folder
EXCEPT the layout.ini file. don't worry, Windows will gradually repopulate
the folder (don't delete it).

See if it helps.

If I misunderstood your problem, then sorry for wasting your time.

Hello'
The "Update.exe" file may have very well been a VIRUS.
Do a fresh updated Virus Scan then Run SpyBot Search and Destroy.
Hopefully you can get rid of the nasty virus that has most likely infected
your computer. Don't Update with any site except www.microsoft.com.
There are a few sites out there that can give you misnamed update files
that can infect your computer.
