Please help - XP won't boot, even in safe mode

I just tried the $35 online chat, only to have the support tech end the chat
when I apparently took too long trying to find the original CD for XP (which
I couldn't put my hands on). I'm hoping this group can help me!

Here's what's happening. I leave my computer running in sleep mode almost
all the time. I haven't touched it for the past few days, only to find it
powered off. That sometimes happens when McAfee or Microsoft automatically
downloads a software update that requires a restart to complete installation.
However, this time, when I powered up the machine, it would not boot, even
in safe mode or last working config mode.

What should I do next? I couldn't find the original CD for the XP that is
installed on this machine (though I did find a CD for XP home that I have
installed on another machine).

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

To get the discussion going, you must describe exactly how far
the boot process goes and what you see on the screen. Remember:
We cannot see your screen!

Here is what happens when I power on the machine:
DOS screen comes up that says Windows did not start successfully, offers
option to start in various safe modes or last known good config. If you
choose last known good config or let Windows start up, the windows intro
screen comes up briefly, there is the briefest flash of a blue screen, and
then it goes right back to the Windows did not start successfully screen. If
you choose any of the safe mode options, it shows a series of .sys entries,
stops and then goes back to the Windows did not start successfully screen.

Your installation appears to have suffered some damage.
Your best bet is probably to boot the machine with your
WinXP CD, then select Repair, then "Repair the existing
installation". Note that if you do not have the original
installation CD for your machine then this selection item
may not appear.

what happens if you select SAFE mode.
