I need to recover a Windows XP system
that does not start because of corruption
in the registry. For this I need to boot with
the setup CD-ROM. My Laptop came with WinXP
home pre-installed.

**I do not have the original
WinXP setup CD-ROM with me.**

I have managed to procure another
WinXP setup CD-ROM (which is a copy of an
original Microsoft CD with a different product
Key).

I need to know whether I can use this CD-ROM
(thus use a different product key) to
boot my computer and do the recovery routine?
Will this effect the data on my machine?

thanks!
Patrick

No, you cannot use a different Windows XP CD
with the Product Key that is assigned to your laptop.
You'll need to contact the manufacturer of your
laptop and request a "Reinstallation CD" which
can be used for a "Repair Install".

Since when? XP CD's aren't tied to a particular license key and as long as
you use the key that came with your computer, it is completely legal.

Not completely true in ALL cases. I have 2 computers with XP Home; 1 has an
OEM version, the other a Retail. I tried to use the retail version to do a
repair in the wrong computer (Not on purpose, a stupid moment)...when I got
to the "Key" screen, it rejected the key on the case, that is suppose to be
for that computer and hardware inside. So, in this example which happened to
me, you theory is incorrect.

I just noticed something in your original post...You say the CD you have is
a "Copy" of an original Windows CD(First, I wouldn't advertise this...it's
illegal)...Second, I doubt if you will be able to boot to the CD, because I
have been told (No, really, told) that copies will NOT boot to the CD,
because of some sort of encryption...try it, but I doubt it...Good Luck...

While CD's aren't tied to a particular license key, they are tied
to the "type" of license. A computer manufacturer can tie his
Product Key to his custom type of installation CD, therefore any 'ol
Windows XP CD will not work. For example, one cannot
use a "Retail Product Key" with an OEM CD, and vice versa.
And not all PC manufacturer's issued Product Keys will work with
a generic "Microsoft Windows XP OEM CD".

Thanks. Just a small point - I was wondering whether
I can use the different WinXP CD with the Product Key
that comes with *the CD* (not the one assigned to my
laptop) to do the re-installation ?

Since I'm in a time crunch, I wanted to know if this was
an option. If not, I'll go ahead and request the CD
as you have pointed out.
