Hi, I have Windows XP. When I try to open Microsoft
Word, I get an error message that says, "Microsoft Word
for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have
tried to reinstall, repair, scan for viruses (there were
none), delete the program then install it...and nothing
has worked. Please help me!
THANKS!!

Hi,

There's something that might be worth trying, given that you have
re-installed Word and it hasn't helped. Do a search for a file named
NORMAL.DOT (normal dot dot). If you find it -- or more than one copy of
it -- rename each to NORMAL.OLD.

Then try launching Word. When Word launches, it looks for an existing
NORMAL.DOT. If it doesn't find a NORMAL.DOT, it creates a brand new one.

However, if that file is corrupt, Word will attempt to use it, even if it's
bad.Word.

And even though you uninstalled and reinstalled Word, if there had been a
corrupt NORMAL.DOT, it would not have been removed nor re-created.

If using an older version of Norton Anti Virus turn off the Office plugin,
it caused problems with both Word and Excel.

Try Deleting your printer. When Word starts it checks
the printer driver and can crash if the driver is wrong
or corrupt.
