I am trying to connect 2 computers to each other with a hub and ethernet
cords. Each PC runs Windows XP and has access on it's own to the internet. I
am simply trying to share files without having to email them.

I have been through the Networking Wizard and everything looks good. When I
try to "View computers in the workgroup" on one computer I can see that
computer in the group but not the other. On the other computer (a laptop) I
could see that computer on the workgroup, today there is nothing there.

I have diabled the WXP firewall and set the Norton firewall to allow the
other PC to access it.

I downloaded a trial verson of a program that advertises to fix this sort of
problem. When it tries to access the network via a router it says the lines
are not connected. I have a Linksys 5-port hub connected to both PCs and a
printer. All lights are green.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Michelle,

What is this program that you downloaded? The name, and the URL of the download
site, would be a good start.

Are both of the computers in the same workgroup? You say that the 2 computers
are connected thru a hub. Are you perhaps paying for 2 Internet connections
from your ISP?

Let's look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we
can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

I have no idea if I pay for more than one IP address or not. We are out in
the sticks with dial up. Both computers can access the internet at the same
time, but I don't need them to access through the hub. I only want to share
files.

The Node Type is Unknown on both.

Here is the link for the program I downloaded:

Interesting, Michelle. I am looking at the Network Magic website. It looks
legit - but what the heck is the market justification for a product that
competes with Windows Networking?

I think I remember Network Magic a few years ago - they were one of the
precursors to UPnP in NAT router management. Now they're doing file sharing
infrastructure? Was NM free?

I really want to see "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer
now. Please.

NM was free. I believe it is a 14-day free trial. It didn't do anything for
me though. As far as I can see there is no troubleshooter at all.

I got my problem fixed. A friend talked to their IT guy. (We don't have
one.) He told me to use specific IP addresses in the TCP/IP properties.
That fixed the problem. Now I just have to figure out how to make my printer
work again.

Thanks for all of your help!
