I am having a problem, where after about 2 minutes on the
internet a window pops up that says windows will be shut
down in 52 seconds. I have been told by some it is a
worm, but i have done a complete reformat, and i was told
that should have gotten rid of the worm, but i still get
the window that says windows will be shut down in 52
seconds. I have also been told it may be a hardware issue
and to try to run it without the battery, that also did
not work. Any ideas?

Completely reformatting and re-installing your machine will clear the virus,
but unfortunately will not stop you from becoming re-infected with it,
especially as there still appear to be a very large number of infected
machines out on the internet spreading the virus.

The following link details the steps that you will need to carry out in
order to remove the problem.

As you are obviously having problems whilst on the internet, to help give
you some extra time you can quickly kill the virus if it's running - this
will not fix things, but should give you the time to do the work you need.
To do this:
Press the CTRL-ALT-DELETE keys at the same time to bring up the task
manager.
Click on the 'Processes' tab
Click on the column title 'Image Name' to sort the table on that entry
Scroll down the Image Names, looking for an entry entitled 'MSBLAST.EXE'
Highlight 'MSBLAST.EXE' and click on 'End Process' saying yes to any
subsequent questions.
This will temporarily remove the virus from memory.

You've got the Blaster worm. Reinstalling Windows isn't enough because
Windows needs an update that's available online. Go to
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe and run that to
get rid of the worm.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to the Tools menu and choose Windows
Update. Download all the critical updates (Q823980 is the one that will
patch the vulnerability that the worm exploits).

Or you can download the patch first and reboot and then go back to Windows
Update and download the rest of the critical updates.

Go into your processes and right click RPC and then
properties and then the recovery tab and then in all three
recovery lines click the drop down list and change the
option to restart service and then close out. Now go to
www.symantec.com and scan for the LovSan or Blaster worm.
It's free. Once you have removed the virus change your RPC
back to restart the computer. good luck.

(Not the original poster) Rev, do you or anyone else know whether
there are any negative consequences to leaving RPC set at "restart
service"? When news of the worm came out, I went into services.msc and
changed the settings in the recovery tab just in case. Haven't gotten
the worm. It's been over a week, and I haven't noticed any difference
in the way my computer operates. Just curious about what has been
changed with regard to non-worm normal operation. Like, will this have
any consequence during a hiccoughing power outage?
