I tried to download SP2 to update my system, and now I get a message
"Explorer.EXE-Entry Point Not Found" with the following message " The
Proceedure Entryu Point SHCreate Thread Ref could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll." Windows loads but the desktop never comes
up. Safe Mode gives the same message. Can start Safe Mode with Command
Prompt. What can I do to save 5 years of data in the works etc. files?

You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update:

Thanks Ramesh for your quick reply. I was hoping to give good news on this
reply, but unfortunately, I don't have any yet. The file I am supposed to
remove first, (KB634707) is not getting removed. each time I come back to
the add/remove window, the file is still there, and when I tried to remove
the SP2 update, the final message says the SP2 update file cannot be found,
and when I acknoledge it, I am right back where I started.

Hi,

You can launch the uninstaller command-line from Start/Run directly:

%windir%\$NtUninstallKB834707$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

And then follow the steps 6-10 in the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888162

If nothing helps, I would backup the data by connecting the subject computer's hard drive to another working XP system. Then perform a clean install with a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD.

The start/run never comes up on the screen. I tried startup from floppies,
could not get that to happen. I am getting a cd and will try a repair, if
that dosent work I will go all the way as you suggested. Thanks for your
help.
