Heather

I was working on my computer last night and I thought my
display settings were a little big. So I went to the
graphics display icon on the bottom taskbar (right beside
the time) and right clicked on it to change my display
settings (in true color) from 1152 x 864 to 1280 x 720. I
have done this a million times before but for some reason
something happened this time.

As soon as I clicked on the 1280 x 720 option from the
menu, my screen went blank and all there was, was a
little blue box in the middle that says "Out of Range". I
could not do anything from that screen. No mouse, no
keyboard... nothing. I tried everything but I could not
get out. I rebooted my computer and it still didn't work
because when it is supposed to go to the blue Welcome
screen, all I would get is that "Out of Range" screen. I
unplugged and replugged my monitor, it still didn't work.
So I called some computer people and they said to press
F8 continually in start up and start my computer in safe mode so that
I can change the settings. But when I press F8, the usual
menu didn't come up. This is pretty much what came up.

"System restart has been paused:

Continue with System Restart
Skip system restart and proceed to System Boot"

Those are the only two options. Both do the same thing
and go to the "Out of Range" screen. I have pressed DEL
to go into settings during start up and I can't find
anything there. I have to reboot my computer everytime. I
can't get through the "Out of Range" screen. I guess the
display settings I wanted just didn't work. But now I
can't get it back. I can't even start my computer in safe
mode.

Do you have any idea what I can do?

Well I know that you know what I am talking about. You do make sense. But it
doesn't work, I have tried. When I right click nothing comes up. ctrl alt
del doesnt work either.

Any other suggestions?

Another thing, you suggested I boot up normally, but I can't... I can't see
anything so I am not able to

Ok no problem Heather. Take a deep breath. Have you got your Windows XP CD
near you.? If so then try Roger's suggestion i.e. to repair install winXP.
You will not lose any data but you will need the Product Key to do this. The
full instructions are here:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Your product key will be at the back of your system (desktop and/or laptop) if
it is an OEM installed version DELL, HP etc. If not then it should be on the
cover of the CD.

Heather, to rebbot just switch off your machine and switch it on again. It
should boot up normally. you will have to do this any way to Repair install
XP.

Also, you could try (although you say you can't) CNTRL+ALT+DEL twice i.e.

CNTRL+ALT+DEL
CNTRL+ALT+DEL

You will get a login screen with this and try logging in as ADMINISTRATOR.

Heather,

I suggest boot up normally and when you get the blank screen, right-click
on the desktop. You will get a small menu from which you can select
PROPERTIES. From the properties dialog box select Settings tab under
screen resolutions select: 1024 by 768 pixels and under color quality use
Highest (32 bit). you might first want to try 800 by 600 to see if you
can see anything on the screen.

The computer is working alright except that the screen resolution is
making you not to see anything on the screen!

Please let us know if this works (or if it doesn't work) so that another
solution can be suggested.

Regards,
