I am running xp pro on a computer that a good friend just recently built for me as a server. It has an AMD athlon 1800+ processor, (3) 256mb sticks of memory,(2) 40gb hd's, a 60gb hd & a 80gb hd. I have AVG virus protection, zone alarm and pop-up stopper loaded on it and thats about it for my programs. (as I said, it's a server)
I have been running into a big problem with the computer just locking up to the point where I have to shut it down and restart it. Sometimes it will be when it is doing nothing, sometimes it does it when I try to open a video/audio file with windows media player or even DIVX player. I checked to see if it would still do this when it's not connected to the network, and it does. There doesn't seem to be any common program or proscess that causes it. I ran a few of the non-critical updates from the windows site and it locked up in the middle of them being installed. Now when I go to the windows site under my history it shows that the updates failed to install, but it wont let me re-download them. As I'm sure you can tell, I am not a master of computer technology or their system functions. I just want my server to work. I hope somone can help, or get me to someone who can.
