Hi Jack,
Have you added new hardware or software recently?
Try this: When starting up, before Windows starts, hit the F8 key.
This will bring up a series of choices. Select Safe Mode. Let it startup,
and see how it goes.
If it starts up OK, choose shut down/restart.
If it still doesn't start normally, try Safe Mode again, and start System
Restore.
Pick a date when your PC was running OK, and restore to that point.
Post your results back here, good luck.

Thanks for your promt anwser, no, I did not install any hardware or software,
yesterday was working fine. I write this from safe mode, I try all you
subgest, The welcome screen disappear, and it hangs on starting screen.I did
a system recovery , and when comes to start, it hangs again.

In my opinion, this has all the signs of a serious virus/trojan infection.
Are you running current anti-virus/spyware software? Which ones?
Since you can use Safe mode with networking, go to
http:\\housecall.trendmicro.com and run their free online scan.
There is also a free online scan at www.ewido.com.
Give these a try, good luck.

Hey Jack

Another thing you can do while your in safe mode. Is to look in the
event log. To get there you right click on my computer, click manage,
then look at event viewer. look at the system event log got to the day
your computer didn't start.

The system is halting due to changes, yet he made no changes.
System restore does not have a working image either.
Malware has caused this type of problem in other systems I have seen.
That's why I suggested an external reference, an on-line scan.

Did you solve this problem? I am having the same issue this morning. I
didn't install any new hardware. I did notice McAffee downloading an update.
Everything seemed fine. The moment I tried to shut down nothing happened.
Then that black page came up offering to start me in safe mode, etc. None of
the options work, as it starts to load windows then just comes back to the
same black screen again. HELPPPPP
