Okay,....I am not a computer guru but at 74 I am learning
a great deal. My grandson played a prank on me during a
recent visit. When I turm on the machine it starts to boot
up...the windows XP screen comes up and then just before
the user window a message comes up that says my grandpa is
an old fart....I click okay the the machine moves
on.....where is this message loaded and how the heck do I
get rid of it? Thank you

Kids! Can't live with them and you can't shoot them!
click on your start, select programs and look in the one
that says "startup" Chances are he placed a batch file in
there that opens up a window and displays the the "crude,
rude remark" If you see something in there that looks
abnormal, just delete it. (Hold you mouse over the name
of the program and right click, select delete)
Good luck.

I really appreciate your effort but I found nothing
there....Could not find it in msconfig...startup either
really bothers me.

Do a search of the registry for "my grandpa is an old fart".

You might also look in the boot.ini file, but be very careful - if you
mess this up, the pc could become unbootable!

Your grandson seems pretty bright. There are many places he could have
hidden this. I would suggest you call him up and threaten to take him out
of your will if he doesn't come back and fix it.

If it's BEFORE you login, my guess is it's a logon message. Very easy to
change.

Start -> Run -> "gpedit.msc" (this will bring up the "Group Policy Editor").

Navigate in the left-hand pane to:

Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings ->
Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.

Then, in the right-hand pane, find "Interactive logon: Message text for
users attempting to log on", and "Interactive logon: Message title for users
attempting to log on".

That's one place to put it. If it isn't there, I'd try the threat method...
