when i try to open a lot of .jpg and .bmp files, i receive the following message:

C:\Documents and Settings\Tara\My Documents\picture.jpg is not a valid Win32 application.

As a graphic designer, I receive many jpg files from clients that i need to open. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, i tried to change the program that they open with...that really didn't help.

The file may be corrupted or it may be a virus file disguised itself as a
picture file to fool you to open it.

What program do you use to save the pictures?
You may be saving the pictures with the ".JPG" extension but the file format
is not "JPG".

e.g.
You are drawing a picture with MS Paint. You click SAVE to save the picture.
You type the name GARFIELD.JPG in the box where it asks for a file name.
But it says BMP under the FILE FORMAT box.
Therefore, you are saving a file with the name "GARFIELD.JPG" but it is in
the BMP format.

Just because you type .jpg does not mean the file will be saved as a .jpg.
What program are you using?
If you are using a program like Photoshop or similar, underneath your "Save
As" file name it will give you the options to "Save as Type" .jpeg, .psd or
bitmap etc.

I use Photoshop, but they normally save just fine. It mainly occurs when I save or download images from the internet.

Also, this is the message I receive when I try to open these files in Photosho

Could not open "C:\Documents and Setting\Tara\Desktop\filename.jpg" because reading arithmetic coded JPEG files is not implemented

I don't know if this will help or not....

Arithmetic jpeg compression is relatively new. It's not likely that
Photoshop 6 or lower will be able to read them. You might have to update to
Photoshop 7. Adobe.com support will probably have a better answer for you.
You might try checking "Auto-update open Documents" in
Edit/Preferences/General.

Let me know if any of this works.
