Please help asap

hi
i was about to watch a movie that i just downloaded and
the thing is its in .dat format and it wont play, i need
it to play in media player but i cant because it didnt
change to .avi or .mpeg or something, i dont know what to
do, please help
Ive tried to change the name - movie.avi or movie.mpeg
but that didnt do anythin.
anyone know how to fix this probelm

Contact the source of the download and ask them what program
is needed to open and play the file. Also see:

Right click on the movie file and click on Open With> Windows Media
Player. If WMP is not already on the Open With Menu choose the program
from the list which is provided. .dat works on my system that way only.
I have set all .dat files to be opened with WMP. So the clicking has to
be done once.
 
You may need to download additional Codecs or plugins to run DAT files which are synonymous with MPEG and MPG files.
