MOST RECENT UPDATE:
On this message board I found some information regarding
similar situation(s). It said that the person was told
by microsoft that the only thing that can be done is
repair with the Windows XP Home Edition CD - so I tried.
It seemed to be working fine/loading until I got a
message saying "needs 'asms' file from the Windows XP
Home Edition CD" the cd was/is in the drive so I did not
understand what the problem was. After thinking that
something might be wrong with my cd I even tried to burn
the cd and the file onto other cds with no success and
now I am totally stuck because it seems that since I
started the repair I cannot do anything alse but continue
the setup process (Can't even srat in safe mode to try
something else).
So today I spoke to someone else for advise and I was
told that someone at their company had a similar
situation happne just recently and it seemed to or might
have be a virus disguised as a windows update (mentioned
above). The person was left with no other option but to
sart a clean install of windows xp. I am really hoping
that I don't have to do this also - this would really
disappoint me.
Any information will be greatly appreciated before having
to do a clean install.
Thank you very much,
Rafael
P.S. I hope this information helps anyone else
experiencing similar problems.

Use Start- Run and enter the following text in the dialog box:
regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll
Then do it again with the following text:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll
If you cannot do this when starting up normally try booting Windows XP
into Safe Mode. To do this turn on the computer and start tapping the
F8 key rapidly when the first information of any kind shows on the
screen. Keep tapping until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and
choose Safe Mode from the menu. When that has finished booting up try
the above commands.
Good luck
