I took a win2000 advanced server/exchange server 2k form a client on Friday.
I wanted to upgrade to a new server and keep there data intact. I created a
backup of everything and installed software on new pc followed the MS kb
article to do a backup/install on new hardware.

Twice I have had server crashes to the point where I needed to wipeout and
start again.

I can get exchange and ad and server running with no errors but if I try to
put it online things go haywire. After a hour or so the server looses the
domain and I cant get exchange to see the mailbox store / public store.

I only have about 15 users in this network is there a simpler way to change
"the box" and keep the data?

sorry for being so vague but I got about 10 shots in me to try to reduce the
stress.....

Reasonable crossposting is to be encouraged when the problem
crosses different groups and is on topic in all of them.

(A better subject would be what I would recommend in regards
the post itself.)

Have you tried following the backup/install with a REPAIR
INSTALL ? (maybe that is what you mean above but I cannot
be sure)

Repair Install: Original OS CDRom-->Install->Same directory
as current OS --> ENSURE you see the option to REPAIR AND
agree to that.

Follow (if it boots) with Windows Update.

I am not familiar enough with the Exchange Server CD to know
if it has a similar "repair" option but I would sure look for that too.

I have never seen a repair install fail IF the new hardware was suitable
for the OS anyway.

You might check the BIOS on the new machine (a common reason for
Win2003 or even Win2003 to crash on install is an out of date BIOS,
but usually those machines never boot at all.)

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR MACHINE UNTIL YOU SOBER UP AND
GET SOME REST. (Not kidding here.)

Hi,

You don't really supply much information on what the problem looks like
(error messages, events in the application log etc) so it is very difficult
to guess what the problem could be but what about your DNS settings - sounds
like a good place to start.

Thanks for the replies.... I was really stressed out yesterday. I am going
give it another shot tomorrow.

I think my issues are getting the ip address and gateway of the old server
into the new box. Currently this system only has 1 NIC and a static ip.
All other pc's use static ip's.

Do I need to use the same settings in the new box? I don't think they
copied over when I restored from current server (or I changed them
unknowingly)

I didn't seem to need the setup disasterrecovery option to get exchange
working in the test environment. I applied service pack 4 for advanced
server and 3 for exchange. Putting the new server in the production
environment I tried to get the server to see the gateway address when all
hell broke loose.

Any suggestions?

They would have copied if you restored a backup or moved a drive.
(or I changed them unknowingly)

Yes. Was that while you were imbibing?
