Have install ICS for xp and 98, is it necessary to have
this four option enable? 1)QOS packet scheduler, 2)client
for microsoft network, 3)file and printer sharing 4)
internet protocol (tcp/ip) As I know TCP/IP is a must,
what about the other three? I ask this question is
because of safety reason, especially file and printer
sharing.

Hi,

1) QOS packet scheduler stands for "Quality of Service"
and is mainly intended for prioritizing traffic over your
connection. This would mainly be used for audio/video
streaming and idf an application is written to use it then
it will give this kind of network traffic priority to
ensure a "steady stream". Personlly I switch it off
becuase it ads an overhead to all traffic. Not worth it to
be honest.

2) Client for Microsoft Network allows computers on a
Microsoft network to access resources from other computers
on the same network. If you have both machines in a
workgroup then you don't need this.

3) File and Printer sharing is exactly what it sound like.
If you want to share a folder or printer on one computer
so that the other one can see it then you need this on the
computer that is doing the "sharing out". I have a main
computer with this option installed and my laptop then
connects to the printer (once it has been shared out) and
to several folders I shared out.

4) TCP/IP is needed for your computers to talk to each
other and the Internet.

THE BEST THING TO DO IS ......

Only enable option (4) on the computer that is directly
connected to the Internet and leave all other options on
the computer that is not (i.e. the one that connects to
the Internet via another one).

Tim

Tim, thanks for your reply. So meaning, I just leave the
4 options in 98, cos this is the client, right? Since you
talk about printer and file sharing here, I would like to
seek advise from you. Both of machine is working fine,
except it cannot share printer. I have tick the file and
printer sharing for both machine and also went into
printer properties under select share this printer and a
hand was being display, meaning the printer is share.
(Have enable file and printer sharing for both pc. But it
still couldn't work. Guess it has something to do
additional drivers, so when I click on additional driver
tab, there's a box for selecting driver. Xp is already
tick, so I tick on 98 and hit ok and it prompt me to
provide a driver and type the path where the file is
located. Sorry I'm a newbie in this area, could you guide
me step by step how to access the path. And should I
insert the printer driver CD, xp CD or 98 CD?
