hi everyone,

i was wondering if someone could help me with a problem i have. i had a BSOD
saying something about a .sys file. after rebooting whenever i try to play an
audio CD i get this message 'this file does not have a program associated
with it'. i am now unable to play CD's directly from my computer and instead
have to right click and select the autoplay menu and then choose the program
to play the cd from there. I have tried updating the drivers but no updates
found and have also deleted the default 'play' option for AudioCD from the
folder options file types menu. Is there any way of getting this option back
and what about the sys file from the BSOD could it have been deleted or got
corrupted? Where would i be able to replace/repair that?

thanks

As far as the BSOD, not sure, but it sounds as though the program you listed
to CD's with, has become uninstalled, or unassociated with that file type.
Open up the CD with the audio files, (right click drive with disk, select
open), and right click one of the files, you should see an option with "Open
With", select it and choose your audio app, and make sure you have the
little box at the bottom ticked for "Always use this program with this file
type". That will reassociate that file type. If you inadvertently
uninstalled your Audio app, you can get a one for free to play your disk's @
www.winamp.com

If the BSOD is in fact related, you can try a system restore to a time
before the problem occurred.
All Programs> Accessories> System tools> System restore

It might help if you posted exactly what the error was verbatim.
"Something about a .sys file" is a bit vague for troubleshooting.

Hi there thanks for your replies.
I didnt take down the error message but im pretty sure it was cdfs.sys that
was the problem.
Further to the first reply i havent removed any programs audio files play
fine however its just the right click and play option on an audio CD that now
doesnt do anything. i tried going into the file types and changing it to
windows media player but that brings up an error message in WMP that it
doesnt know how to play those file types??? When using autoplay and WMP to
play the CD it can play it???

I also tried system restore but there were no savepoints oddly but i did
use Norton GoBack which did not correct the error.

thanks again
