I am using window moviemaker (xp) to put a bunch of clips into a single WMV
file, then using windows player to play it. One big problem, the scroll bar
device at the bottom to move around in the movie doesn't function.

Any ideas. I am saving the file as a 2M/sec NTSC and don't want to go much
lower. Can I get the file saved as a mpg file.

Hi there,

I am not certain about this. I think the video has to play from end to end
before you can use the the fast forward and reverse buttons...and having
re-read your question I will try and answer the question asked, sorry

Is the scroll bar grayed out? in the normal fashion of a disabled control
or is it normal and you just can't move it. I would guess the reason it
would be grayed out is that the media is not properly closed by any other
application. Its not something I have seen myself....I wonder if there is
anyone reading this that might no the answer.

With regards saving to mpg. MM2 can not do that. You would need another
package. There are several around and some of them give you a free trial
period before you have to pay for the MPG licence. Type MPEG ENCODER in
your browser it will throw up loads of places for you to go look.

It is not grey out. I have had a couple of other times that the scroll
would scroll using some video I down loaded. I find it very surprising that
Microsoft make a movie maker that makes movies its movie play can play
properly....

No no that I think about it, I am not surprised at all :-)

Hi there,

Oh well. It sounds like a real bug you have there. Having tried it at my
end I can drag the slider to left or right and the movie picks up where you
drop the slider. it even works well for the movies I have put on the
internet.

I do not know if the problem has ever been documented before. If it has a
trip to www.papajohn.org might be in order. Try the problem solving section

Thank you for your help in this matter. Just to let you know, the video
stopped before it was really complete. I suspect the slider and early
termination problems are related and hopefully a single occurrence.

RIght, they would definitely be related. WMP can't advance properly in a
truncated file that doesn't match its index. You'd need to reindex the
file, but then should be okay with that file again-

(speaking for myself and doing this in my free time)
See http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
