How do I place sideways text (ie. a page number) outside the left hand margin
area of a landscape document? I think I understand the sideways part, but
how do I put something outside the defined margin area? It isn't a header of
footer since it's on the side.

Much thanks!

A header/footer can be anywhere on the page - its is simply something in the
header/footer plane of the document.

Put a frame or textbox in the header or footer. Put a page number field in
it. Use the button on the tables and borders toolbar to turn it sideways.
