Pivot Table Blanks not displaying properly?

I am working with pivot tables out of several workbooks. On all of them up
until my current, blanks were displayed as (blank), suddenly they're
displayed as a single space " ". For the purposes of my analysis, these two
are very different (and some data can and does have single spaces.

I hit the pivot table options and uncheck the 'display blanks as: ' box, but
nothing changes, even after I refresh the data. I re-check the box and type
in (blank)...refresh the data, and no change. Re-insert the fields...no
change.

I go back into my other documents where (blank) is properly displayed and
the check box with "display blanks as: ' ' " is already checked, even though
it displays as (blank)!

What gives? How do I alleviate this situation?

Hi

You should be seeing two distinct entries.
(Blank) and " ".
They are different. Blank has nothing in the cell of the relevant filed,
but " " represents all of the rows where there is an entry of a space
character.
