My computer has been unable to get to any websites for the last couple of
days. The symptoms are:

1. All network devices appear to be functioning properly, wireless
connection appears connected, wired ethernet appears connected.
2. When I attempt to go to any website, I get the "unable to find server"
page.
3. When I ping the url of the site, I get a "could not resolve host...".
4. When I ping the address of the site, I get what you see in the subject of
this message "Pinging °ÿ with 32 bytes of data", (with the degree symbol and
lower case y with diaeresis where the IP address should be), but I DO get
responses from that request.
5. ipconfig shows all functioning devices, with the exception that the
computer cannot obtain any dhcp settings from the router for reasons I
assume are associated with this issue.

Things I have tried are:
1. ipconfig /flushdns - /registerdns
2. ipconfig /release - /renew
3. ran ms anti-spyware scan
4. re-install of network device drivers
5. re-install of tcp/ip
6. installed xp service pack 2

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Jim,

This is very likely a problem with the LSP / Winsock subsystem.

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yep, that was the issue. Running "netsh winsock reset catalog" and a reboot
resolved the issue.

Thank you Chuck.
