If you were to ping another computer, how do you know the IP address of the
other computer - ask the person with the computer?? What is the purpose of
pinging.

That would be one way, yes.

What is the purpose of
pinging.

To determine whether basic communication is possible using the TCP/IP
network protocol.

I haven't tried pinging under Linux lately and I happen to be
looking at news groups on Windows XP machine but, if you ping an
address in a DOS window, the IP is displayed.

For a trivial example.

Ping recfoodcooking.com
Pinging recfoodcooking.com [196.41.3.188] with......

Doesn't the same thing happen in Linux?

Sorry, the tenor of this reply must suggest I was replying to
a Linux group. It's cold outside and snowing, I am using some
internal heating and I was thinking about c.o.linux.misc :-)
